La contribution de Wilhelm Furtwängler à l’histoire musicale moderne ne peut être comparée qu’à celle de légendes comme Karajan et Kleiber. La présente édition en 34 CDs raconte l’histoire de cette véritable icône du 20ème siècle, documentant de manière chronologique son legs discographique à travers les différents chapitres de sa vie artistique, des premiers enregistrements pour Polydor à ceux réalisés sous haute tension durant la guerre, jusqu’aux gravures studio des années 50 pour Deutsche Grammophon. Du chef d’orchestre brillant, ingénieux et controversé, dont l’art fut profondément enraciné dans la tradition de l’idéalisme romantique, l’édition comprend des jalons du répertoire austro-allemand ainsi que sa deuxième symphonie, Furtwängler s’étant identifié au début de sa carrière comme compositeur. Un DVD avec le célèbre Don Giovanni capté à Salzbourg en 1954 à la tête du Wiener Philharmoniker (avec Siepi, Grümmer, Dermota, Berger, della Casa et Berry) complète le coffret.
